Easy Steps to Budgeting is a practical and engaging two-day course that equips participants with the skills and mindset to take full control of their money. Rooted in real-life application and taught in everyday language, this course breaks down the budgeting process into simple, clear, and achievable steps.

Designed for individuals, couples, and families, this course provides a foundation for lasting financial confidence and stewardship. Whether you are just beginning your financial journey or trying to regain control, this class meets you where you are.

This course is part of the Teach Me Money™ Easy Steps Series and may be taken as a standalone class or as a module within the full 12 Easy Steps to Financial Empowerment Bundle.

  • Gain confidence in managing income, bills, savings, and debt

COURSE PREREQUISITES

There are no formal prerequisites to take this course. However, participants should come prepared with:

  • A basic understanding of their monthly income and expenses
  • Willingness to gather and apply real financial numbers during the course
  • Access to a smartphone, tablet, or laptop (recommended)
  • A notebook or printed version of the participant guide (provided)

DAY 1 – FOUNDATIONS OF FUNCTIONAL BUDGETING

Theme: “Money Mapping – Know Where It Goes”
Total Time: 3 Hours

Schedule:

  • 0:00 – 0:15: Orientation and Course Objectives
  • 0:15 – 0:45: Module 1 – Why Budgets Fail
    Understand the emotional, behavioral, and practical reasons most people struggle with budgeting—and how to overcome them.
  • 0:45 – 1:30: Module 2 – Finding the Numbers
    Learn how to gather accurate income and expense data, and differentiate between fixed, variable, and irregular expenses.
  • 1:30 – 2:00: Module 3 – Budgeting Frameworks
    Explore the 50-30-20 Rule, Zero-Based Budgeting, and other frameworks to structure your plan.
  • 2:00 – 2:30: Module 4 – Expense Tracking Tools
    Introduction to digital apps, manual trackers, and Excel-based methods to monitor spending.
  • 2:30 – 3:00: Module 5 – Budget Setup Lab
    Begin building your personal or family budget using templates provided.

Homework Assignment:
Complete your budget worksheet with actual income and expenses. Choose and install one budgeting app or software before Day 2.


DAY 2 – BUILDING AND LIVING YOUR BUDGET

Theme: “Control the Flow – Every Dollar Has a Job”
Total Time: 3 Hours

Schedule:

  • 0:00 – 0:15: Check-In and Budget Review
  • 0:15 – 1:00: Module 6 – Monthly Budget Lab
    Finalize and adjust your budget, including irregular income and seasonal expenses.
  • 1:00 – 1:30: Module 7 – Budgeting Tools and Hybrid Methods
    Learn about digital budgeting tools (EveryDollar, Mint, GoodBudget) and hybrid methods (cash envelope + digital).
  • 1:30 – 2:00: Module 8 – Emergency & Sinking Funds
    Understand the importance of preparing for emergencies and planning for known future expenses.
  • 2:00 – 2:30: Module 9 – Budgeting as a Team
    Strategies for budgeting as a couple or family: roles, communication, and shared goals.
  • 2:30 – 3:00: Module 10 – Commitment & Continuity
    How to maintain your budget long-term, with built-in review points and rewards.

Final Activity:
Share your budget commitment plan. Receive your Certificate of Completion. Join the 30-Day Accountability Challenge (optional).


CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION

A personalized Certificate of Completion will be issued to all participants who complete both sessions and submit a final budget. Certificates will be sent via email (PDF) or provided in print for in-person attendees.

This certificate is endorsed by the ISBF Institute and the Financial Power Institute and may be used toward full credit in the 12 Easy Steps to Financial Empowerment Series.
